We packed a picnic and took an hour drive Northeast
Neither Mom or I had been to it before.
It has over 6,000 acres and offers trails for hikers, horses and mountain bikers.
Some trails are multi-use but most of them are designated either for
hikers and horses or bikers. This was a nice way to set it up for everyone.
The bikers didn't have to worry about running into anyone but themselves
and usually didn't have to worry about that either because their trails
were direction specific.
Part of the park was once a phosphate mine and this sector has HILLS! Yay!
We chose to explore this part first...
There were some pretty shear drop offs at times.
Mom had to pull me back from one as I was paying attention
to what was up in the trees and not what was below my feet.
Yep started sliding down. Mom dragged me back up though.
I knew she would so why worry? ;)
Around a few bends and up and down some hills we came across this...
Now that's a real Florida swamp for ya!
We stopped on a knoll with a bench for a rest and a snack...
Mmmmm...crackers and cheese?
Yes please :P
After our snack and a bit of water we headed off down one of the flat trails...
The maps we were given at the ranger station really didn't tell us much
about where the trails went or how long they were so we really
had no idea of where we might end up...
Like a lake with a very big alligator in it...
Mom guessed it was about a 12 footer.
Needless to say we did not venture close to the banks.
Unless fed by people, gators tend to have a natural fear and
do not come near (people that is). Unless of course they're really hungry.
Dogs are a very different matter and are in extreme danger
if allowed to swim in fresh water rivers or lakes.
That's why you only see me swim in salt or brackish waterways.
We left the lake and traveled back into the woods...
And came upon a river...
And it was right around here that Mom took a wrong turn.
Yep we meant to start heading back toward the picnic area but
after a while and miles and miles...
I think we're lost Mom.
So we laid down in the grass, had some water, then resumed walking...
We passed by some more swamp.
A row of cedar trees that seemed rather out of place.
Some trees with really long vines strong enough to swing from :)
And finally came out at the equestrian show field...
Yay! Civilization!
This is a map of where we started (Picnic Area) and where we
ended up...
When we finally made it back to the picnic area,
Mom took me to a creek we'd spotted earlier so I could cool off...
Ah....much better :D
And then we went home. I slept the whole way.
My wagger was real tired :)
