My Volunteer Crop

This all began when Mom decided to save some earthworms from a bait shop.
Yes, she bought them, brought them home, fed them, they multiplied and
then she freed them in my raised veggie bed.

Then she continued to feed them with kitchen scraps.
Time passed and...

Viola! This whole bed was covered with Sweet Potato vines!
Yep, some of the kitchen scraps included cut off ends of sweet potatoes.

This is how much I had after harvesting just half the bed...

Pant! Pant! Even for a digger like me, that's a lot of digging!

When the whole bed was harvested,
my five gallon bucket was full! :D

Good thing I like sweet potatoes!!!

Sure hope the neighbors do too ;)

Mom says we'll be having sweet potato pie instead of pumpkin pie
for Thanksgiving this year :)

Waggin at ya,
Farmer Roo

PeeS: Here's the weekly jigsaw puzzle (about a week late butt... ;)

  19. You grew all those sweet potatoes from a couple of worms??? I need to get me some worms for my new yard! I love sweet potatoes - especially sweet potato fries!!

    Your pal, Pip

  20. It looks like saving those worms really paid off! They're not going to make an appearance in Pet Fiction Theatre, are they? I can hear that "The worms crawl in, the worms crawl out, the worms play pinochle in your snout" verse in my head already!

  21. Wow! That is amazing, Roo! Your human really has the magical green thumb! She can even get a crop out of compost!! :-)

We LOVE sweet potatoes over here - there are lots of different kinds in the supermarkets. Back in NZ, there were many varieties of "kumara" which is Maori for sweet potato - purple and gold and red and all delicious!

  29. Sweet taters are most nommy in any form. Plus they can be stored for like 100 years and still taste good.
