It's been real hot and humid here. Low 80's in the middle of the night.
Our walks have to begin before 8 o'clock or we melt.
So one day last week, we left the house before sunrise
and headed for Emerson Point Preserve.
We arrived just after sun up...
and were rewarded with many wonderful sights!
Dolphins were feeding not far off shore...
Mom got some video of them.
They were a bit far away for our camera to capture them well
so the quality isn't very good...
If you're having trouble viewing this video, go to YouTube link here.
As we traversed the trails,
we came upon an observation tower...
(Steps George! :D)
As we reached the top we saw a beautiful faint rainbow
adorning the face of a cloud...
And lots of dragonflies feasting on the many
mosquitoes and noseeums.
Mom was cheering them on as she forgot the bug spray
and she was getting eaten alive by the lil buggers.
We left the observation tower...
And headed over a walkway...
Toward a marsh area where we thought we might see some bird activity.
Along the way we met this little feller...
He's a Green Anole lizard. A Florida native you don't see
often as the Brown Anoles (thought to have immigrated from Cuba)
have pretty much taken over and depleted their numbers.
When we reached the marsh, we were greeted with a plethora
of bird activity. Including the rarely seen Roseate Spoonbill!
(this close-up compliments of the internet)
There were two of them feeding along the bank...
This species feeds in shallow fresh or coastal waters by swinging its bill from side to side as it steadily walks through the water, often in groups. The spoon-shaped bill allows it to sift easily through mud. It feeds on crustaceans, aquatic insects, frogs, newts and very small fish ignored by larger waders.---courtesy of Wikipedia.
Mom was able to capture this feeding behavior on video along
with several other shorebirds also feeding in their own fashion...

It was beginning to get hot so after a short rest...
we headed on over to an area with access to the bay for a dip...
The water was so calm and clear.
After we were refreshed, we climbed some more steps...
to enjoy the view...
On our way back to the bay for another dip,
we stopped to smell the flowers...
And after the last refreshing dip...
And a whimsical photo shoot by Mom of some sea foam...
We headed home.
Thinkin Mother Nature was in a really good mood that day! :)

ReplyDeleteA very exciting adventure dolphins, birds, dragonflies, beautiful hiking weather. Doggie bliss!
Have you seen a dolphin up close? I wonder if they would like us doggies. I just watched a youtube clip where a dolphin was following this boat that a dog was on and the dolphin repeatedly jumped up and touched noses with the dog.
